Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for patients in the hospital. We work closely with primary care physicians, surgeons and other medical specialists to follow the care of residents in the DFW metroplex.
Patients admitted to a hospital generally are more ill today than they were years ago. They need more attention from doctors and often need it more quickly. Because hospitalists work exclusively in the hospital setting, we are available to provide care continuously. Patients are typically seen by only one or two hospitalists from admission to discharge.
By spending all of our time caring for seriously ill patients, hospitalists become highly skilled at meeting the specialized needs patients have after surgery or in intensive care. We regularly review lab tests, adjust treatments as needed and monitor progress. We meet with hospitalized patients and their families daily and communicate with primary doctors to ensure the continuity of care.
Studies indicate that these patients get better faster and are released from the hospital sooner. Hospitalist programs nationwide have reported a 17 percent reduction in length of hospital stay and a 13.5 percent reduction in average costs, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. DFW Hospitalists™ document similar results, reducing length of hospital stay by about one day.
Most hospitalists are board-certified internal medicine physicians who have completed medical residency training at hospitals. We care for patients who are ages 18 or older but do not provide obstetric care or perform other specialty services, such as surgery. We tend to any medical issues that arise for hospital patients. In addition to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine we see patients at North Hills Hospital, Ethicus Hospital of Grapevine, Medical Center of Lewisville, and Harris H.E.B. Additionally, to maintain continuity of inpatient care we even continue to follow our hospital patients into many of the local nursing and rehabilitation centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving, Southlake, Grapevine, Denton, Lewsiville, Flower Mound, and throughout the metroplex.
Our patients come from a range of ethnic, cultural and spiritual backgrounds, reflecting North Texas' draw as a vacation and retirement destination. The physicians of DFW Hospitalists™ and our staff reflect that diversity and cultural sensitivity.
The hospitalist program is carefully explained before and during hospital admission so patients understand the advantages of around-the-clock attention. Lastly, we make certain that the patients we care for are returned to their primary care doctors with a complete list of discharge instructions and medications.
